Franklin Families and Students,

On behalf of the entire staff at Franklin Middle School, we would like to wish each and every one of our students and their families a Happy Thanksgiving. We hope that in the coming days all of you have the opportunity to stay safe and enjoy the time to relax and recharge.

We are very thankful for all of the Franklin families and community members that support our students. In a school year that is unlike any other, we are grateful for everything that you have done this year, big and small, seen and unseen, to set our students up for success. We appreciate the strong school-to-home partnerships that have been fostered that allow us to work together to provide our students with a successful educational experience.

With Gratitude,

Franklin Families and Students,

Good afternoon! Thank you to all of our students, staff, and families for your hard work, dedication, and support that made this a successful week at Franklin!

We know that there is a lot of information being shared right now about the operating status of FCPS. I would like to provide you with more information  about the current health metrics in FCPS and the health mitigation strategies for reopening schools.

At this time, there are no changes to the current operating status at Franklin and our instructional schedule for next week will remain unchanged. All students will have their Check and Connect session on Monday morning at 8:00 AM and we will follow our normal schedule on Tuesday.

I also would like you to Save the Date for two events that will take place in January at Franklin. We will host an Equity Town Hall on January 13 and our annual Curriculum Night will take place on January 21. More details will be shared in the coming weeks about both of these important events.

As we look forward to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, we want to encourage our families and students to disconnect from school and technology during this time. To support this, the FMS staff will not be assigning any work over this break or have large projects and tests occurring immediately upon our return. We will follow a similar practice during the winter and spring breaks.

Please feel free to contact me directly at dpwright@fcps.edu if there is anything we can do to support your student and your family. Best wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Franklin MS Weekly Update - November 13

Franklin Families and Students,

Good Afternoon! It has been a busy week at Franklin and we continue to start the 2nd quarter with a lot of positive momentum. A big thank you to all of the families and students who attended our yearbook photo events on Monday and Thursday. Even though it was only for a few moments, it was exciting to have our students in the building again and to reconnect with so many of them. As long as the health conditions allow, we plan to offer other opportunities like this throughout the school year.

The FCPS School Board met last night to receive a Return to School update from the Superintendent and his team. A recording of the meeting is available here and the slidedeck used during the presentation can be found on the school board website. As more decisions are made at the division level, we will host additional Franklin Town Halls to inform our community about what the Return to School plan will look like at FMS.

On Wednesday of this week, all of our students were able to take part in a Veterans Day presentation during their Falcon Time session. They engaged in reflective discussions about the importance of honoring our veterans and what Veterans Day means to them.

On behalf of the Franklin Middle School students and staff, we would like to express our gratitude to all of the men and women, and their families, who have served our nation as members of the United States Armed Forces.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

This year, all FCPS students taking Math 7, Math 7 Honors, Pre-Algebra, Algebra and Algebra Honors are required to take Math Inventory pre and post assessments for the purpose of measuring student growth. The assessment is ungraded and not intended to measure current grade level standards. Franklin students will take this assessment on Monday, November 16 to begin at the conclusion of the News Show during Check and Connect.

During this week’s math classes, students have received instruction on how to log in and how to complete the assessment. Please encourage your child to attend Monday’s Check and Connect with their Falcon Time teacher and to take this 25-30 question CAT assessment until 9:30 AM or until the test concludes.

Art Supplies Distribution on November 16

Mrs. French will be distributing watercolors and any remaining art supplies to all of her art students on Monday, November 16 from 12:00 PM - 2:30 PM.  This drive-through process is an opportunity to visit the school to gather instructional materials that are not available in a digital format and to say hello.

Franklin MS will make all reasonable modifications to policies and programs to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to enjoy all of its programs, services, and activities. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service to facilitate the pickup of materials should contact Mr. Gibbs (ragibbs@fcps.edu) as soon as possible.

Families who cannot pick up art materials on Monday are welcome to come to Franklin each weekday between the hours of 7:30 AM and 3:00 PM. Please use the Door 1 intercom and our front office staff will be happy to assist you.

Members may access the meeting through our NJHS Google Classroom (all members already have access) and use the Google Meets link in the banner. We will be discussing member expectations, leadership opportunities, GPA minimums, and service. The meeting will be recorded and posted in our NJHS Google Classroom should a member not be able to attend.

Using Google Classroom to Support Your Student at Home

As the first quarter closes and we move into our second quarter, the partnership between the school and home continues to be important for monitoring student progress and performance in the virtual setting. Google Classroom is the Learning Management System (LMS) that all of our Franklin teachers are using to assign, collect, and grade school work.

Since it is web-based, parents and guardians have access to their child’s Google Classrooms from a computer or smartphone once they enter their child’s username (studentID#@fcpsschools.net) and password. There are a number of features in Google Classroom that make it easier for parents to identify missing or late assignments. Please take a moment to review this short video created to help parents and guardians navigate their child’s Google Classroom account. Consistent access to your child’s Google Classroom account is an important way you can work collaboratively with teachers to help your child be successful with distance learning. If you have any general questions about Google Classroom, please reach out to our School-based Technology Specialist Ryan Richardson (rdrichardso1@fcps.edu).

Franklin MS After School Program

After-School reminders:

  • Students can find more information about the After-School Program in their grade-level Google Classroom and on the student After-School site.
  • Students should check out the “Clubs by Day” and “Club Descriptions” sheets for club information and schedules.
  • The after-school program will not meet on Monday, November 23 and Tuesday, November 24.

If you have any questions about the After-School Program, please feel free to contact Mrs. Mollé (cemolle@fcps.edu).

School Board Votes to Make Changes to 2020-21 Calendar

The Fairfax County School Board has voted to make Inauguration Day (Wednesday, January 20, 2021) a holiday for Fairfax County Public Schools students and employees, and Juneteenth (Saturday, June 19, 2021) a holiday for employees that will be observed on Friday, June 18, 2021.

On the 2020-21 school year calendar, January 20, 2021, had been listed as an instructional day for students and regular workday for all employees.

Previously, during every fourth year, Inauguration Day was designated as a holiday for students and employees. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recently authorized its 2021 holiday schedule, which includes Inauguration Day as a holiday for Fairfax County employees.

In an effort to further create an inclusive environment, Juneteenth was included as a holiday in 2020; it was recently included by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors as a holiday for county employees. Virginia has also passed legislation to observe Juneteenth as an official holiday for state employees.

See the complete 2020-21 school year calendar.

Franklin Families and Students,

Good Afternoon!

We hope that you have had a great week. It has been exciting at Franklin as we welcomed back some of our students to in-person instruction on Monday. I am very proud of the hard work our teachers, staff, families, and students have done to make this transition a successful one.

It is hard to believe that today is the end of the 1st quarter. I would encourage all of you to review the message all FCPS families received from Dr. Brabrand yesterday and the video that accompanied it.

Thank you to those of you who were able to join me for our Parent and Family Town Hall on Wednesday night. If you were unable to attend, the links below will provide you with a recording of the session and a copy of the presentation that was used during the event.

Parent and Family Town Hall Recording

Parent and Family Town Hall Presentation Slides

I know that this is a lot of information to consider and that it is a difficult decision to make. We will honor the choice you made in the FCPS July survey to determine the setting for instruction. If your circumstances have changed and you would like to change the choice you made in July, please complete the form found at the link below by November 6 and we will try to accommodate your request based on the availability of staff and space. This deadline has been extended to allow our families additional time to make this important decision. We will strive to minimize the impact of this transition, however, some students may experience a change in schedule or class assignment as we work to accommodate everyone’s preferences.

Complete This Form to Update Your Choice by November 6

Thank you again for your partnership during the 1st quarter of the academic year. In a school year unlike any other, we are grateful for everything you are doing to support your student!

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Franklin Families and Students,

Good Afternoon!

We hope that you and your family are having a great week. Thank you to our families who were able to join us for our Virtual Parent Coffee on Wednesday afternoon. We had the opportunity to celebrate our successes from the start of the 2020-21 school year, share resources, provide updates on the return to school plan, and answer questions. We look forward to continuing these conversations and connecting with our families!

We welcome our first group of students back to our school building for in-person instruction beginning next week. We will follow strict safety and health protocols to minimize health risks for students and staff. To learn more, visit the FCPS Student Health and Safety Guidance Document here. Thank you to our staff and our families who have been partnering together to make this a successful transition.

During the next week, families in the Franklin community will be receiving updated information from FCPS on the Return to School plans for our students. Franklin MS will host a Return to School Town Hall on Wednesday, October 23 at 6:00 PM. This will be an opportunity to ask questions regarding the FCPS Return to School plan and to learn about what it will look like at FMS. A link will be sent out for the session on Wednesday afternoon and we will share a recording if you are unable to attend.

Please feel free to reach out to me directly at dpwright@fcps.edu at any time if you have any questions or if there is anything we can do to support your student and your family. Best wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Paperless Report Cards

Families have the opportunity to “Go Paperless” and receive online only report cards. Going paperless for report cards will not impact any other mailings from FCPS.   Mondays @ Franklin

We appreciate your partnership and support with ensuring your students are accessing asynchronous virtual learning and our Check & Connect sessions on Mondays.

All Franklin students should attend the Check & Connect session from 8:00 AM - 8:30 AM and they should use the link for their 4th period Falcon Time class. Check & Connect will occur every Monday morning and we will utilize this time as an opportunity to continue to develop relationships at Franklin. It will allow our staff to foster connections with our students and for our students to get to know their classmates.

Additionally, our staff will invite selected students to attend intervention sessions to receive targeted academic support ahead of the instructional week. To support student attendance during these intervention blocks, our front office staff will be sending communications through email to the parents and guardians of students who have been requested to attend an intervention session.

Thank you for your support!

Art Supply Distribution on Monday, October 19

Mrs. French will be distributing additional art materials to all of her Art students on Monday, October 19 from 12:00 PM - 2:30 PM.  This drive-through process is an opportunity to visit the school to gather instructional materials that are not available in a digital format.

Distribution procedures will be as follows:

  • Social distancing guidelines will be in effect and please review the health screening questions found here before visiting FMS.
  • Vehicles will enter the bus loop and pull ahead to the pick-up station near Door 2.
  • Families and students will stay in their vehicle.
  • Whenever possible, materials will be placed in the trunk of the vehicle.
  • Vehicles will exit the bus loop near Old Dairy Road.

All Art, Engineering, and FACS materials are part of a student fee included in course enrollment and can be paid using MySchoolBucks.

If you are unable to stop by the school on Monday, you are welcome to come to Franklin each weekday between the hours of 7:30 AM and 3:00 PM. Please use the Door 1 intercom to communicate with the staff and our front office staff will be happy to assist you.

  Digital Citizenship Week, October 19-23

FCPS is celebrating Digital Citizenship Week from October 19-23, 2020! This year’s theme is We Are All Digital Citizens! Digital Citizenship Week was established by Common Sense Media. Common Sense Media is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century.

Last year, Franklin was recognized as a Common Sense Media School and we look forward to continuing our focus on explicitly teaching safe and healthy online behavior. We started lessons during Falcon Time this last Wednesday with a focus on digital footprints and online identity. In an effort to create meaningful learning opportunities, we are connecting these lessons to our Positivity Project character traits and social emotional learning.

Each day next week will support a daily question about being a digital citizen. As families, we encourage you to reach out to your student and discuss these questions at home.

On the evening of Friday, October 23 students and families are encouraged to practice media balance by taking a break from screens to engage in real-world experiences and quality time with their family.

Try some of these ideas:

  • Have a device-free dinner and focus on connecting as a family. The #DeviceFreeDinner campaign by Common Sense Media comes with a wonderful 3-page Family Starter Kit that includes tips for getting started, a printable Family Commitment Pledge, and even a printable sign for designating the place (e.g., basket, box) families will place their devices during dinner. The Family Dinner Project also has a wealth of great conversation starters geared towards children of different ages.
  • Have a family board game night instead of playing video games or watching TV.
  • Make a phone call or write a letter to a family member or friend instead of sending a text or email.
  • Spend time outside as a family and leave the phone behind.

FCPS has also developed a Digital Citizenship Online Course for Families with Teens. This four-module online course has been developed for  parents/guardians and their teen(s) in grades 7 and up. After viewing the Introduction, parents should start with Module 1: Parents Only and then use Modules 2 - 4 with their teen(s). Modules 2 - 4 are designed to support family conversations about the topics related to digital citizenship. Families are encouraged to work through the course at their own pace and complete any module or activity of interest. While these modules won’t teach you everything you need to know, they provide a solid foundation upon which your family can build. For more resources on digital citizenship click on the link below.

Good Afternoon!

Fall is in the air and it is hard to believe it is already October! As we continue to work together to support each other during a school year unlike any other, we have several upcoming events that will allow you to continue to connect and engage with the school and community. During this event, small groups of our teachers will be available in content-specific video sessions that you can drop into at any point during the 90 minute event. For example, you might start in English, then head over to World Languages, and finish in the Health and PE session. Our staff will not be delivering presentations during the sessions. Rather, the focus will be on answering your general questions about the course content, instructional and grading practices, and curriculum resources.

If you are interested in attending this event, you will need to pre-register using the information found below and the links for each session will be sent to you on the morning of October 5. If you are unable to attend, please feel free to reach out to your student’s teacher, counselor, or administrator with any questions.

The actual opt-out form is not required. Opt-out emails should be addressed to Mr. Howes at srhowes@fcps.edu with the subject line FLE opt-out: Student last name

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Middle School (7-8). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent Vue https://www.fcps.blackboard.com.

To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless". All parents who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed report cards. How can I make sure I receive emergency information from Fairfax County Public Schools?

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) communicates all essential information to parents via email. The information is also translated into eight languages: Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. Information communicated via email includes:

  • School closings and delays
  • Attendance
  • Emergencies at school
  • Low lunch balance
  • Power, phone, or internet outages at school
  • Bus delays
  • Testing dates

When providing an e-mail address to FCPS, please avoid using an educational (.edu-including fcps.edu), military (.mil) or government (.gov) email address. The security settings on government servers often block messages from FCPS. It is a best practice to not use work related email addresses; therefore, it is important to use an email address from another internet service provider such as Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc.

Parents can receive text messages for emergencies and essential information. Please make sure your parent cell phone numbers are listed in the “cell telephone” fields in the parent/guardian contact information section on the emergency care information form for each of your children. Parents and guardians can view and update emergency contact information online using the weCare@school feature of FCPS 24-7 Learning. Standard message and data charges may apply for text messages depending on their cell phone service plan. Click here for more information.

Franklin MS Weekly Update - September 11

Franklin Families and Students,

As a school community, we reflect on the importance this day gained in 2001. We will never forget the brave men and women who lost their lives and the courageous sacrifices of those that responded on this day nineteen year ago. We have all been impacted in one way or another and as educators, it is our responsibility to help the next generation understand the significance of September 11.

We are grateful to everyone who helped our Franklin Falcons have a great first week of school. This was a joint effort by our parents, families, community, teachers, staff and students! THANK YOU and great job!

While we got off to a strong start, we were unfortunately interrupted by an internet outage that was widespread throughout the East Coast today. We will continue to monitor this situation and will provide updates should Monday’s instruction be disrupted.  Teachers are ready to transition to asynchronous work as needed.

Parents and Families….we need your help! Please complete the Digital Resources Parent Consent Form.  Every family must complete this for each student. Teachers need this permission to continue using the programs that promote the highest levels of student engagement.

We are extremely proud of our students, teachers, and staff for a very successful week in our virtual learning environment! We can’t wait to reconnect with them on Monday morning at 8:00 AM during our first Check and Connect session.

Always feel free to reach out to me directly if there is anything we can do to support your student and family.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Attendance at Franklin During Virtual Learning

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requires all schools to take attendance during virtual learning this school year. FCPS must take attendance Mondays through Fridays, unless there is a student holiday on a Monday. Students aged 5-18 must attend school every day school is in session, unless they are excused from school. To support this, parents must report absences to school each time the student may be absent.

Beginning on September 10, our school staff will reach out to families and automated messages will be sent if their student has an unverified absence from a class. If your student is unable to attend a class because of technical difficulties, please contact us and know that we will work with you to make sure the appropriate status is recorded in the system.

If your  student will miss school or a class for any reason, please contact Franklin MS:

  • Absence/Tardy Phone Line: (703) 904-5151
  • Absence/Tardy Email: FranklinMiddle.Attendance@fcps.edu

Return to School: Supports for Students with Disabilities

Check out the FCPS web page for information on distance learning supports for students with disabilities. This page covers a wide range of topics, including information for parents of students in grades PreK-12, accessing instruction in school-based programs, as well as information around nontraditional school programs, public day and career center programs, homebound and home-based instruction, and multi-agency services.

Parental Consent for Select Digital Resources

At Franklin Middle School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year

Additional Contact Info:   Parental Consent for Select Digital Resources

Please reach out to your teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

Franklin Families and Students,

Good afternoon! These last few weeks have flown by as we have worked together to get ready for the first day of school. Our staff has been hard at work setting up virtual classrooms, collaborating and learning from each other, and laying a foundation that will foster strong relationships with our students and families.

As we arrive at the start of the school year, I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you. During this transition to a virtual school setting, we are grateful for everything you are doing for your student. The time, effort, and support that our families have provided our students has been amazing. Please know how much we appreciate you. The entire FMS staff is excited to partner with you during the upcoming school year.

We are also grateful for the opportunity to connect with our students at this afternoon’s Virtual Orientation and help them get ready for the beginning of school. Our students did a great job!

There are a few updates below that we hope will be useful next week. Always feel free to reach out to me directly at dpwright@fcps.edu if there is anything we can do to help.

Have a great long weekend and we look forward to connecting with everyone on Tuesday morning!

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal
