The Franklin Track Team is enjoying the first season ever of middle school track in FCPS. Go Falcons!

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

As I shared in my community message on Wednesday, this week in Falcon Time we spent time learning about the power of our words.  Specifically, we dug into recognizing our intent does not always match the impact felt by others.  As reflected in our school improvement and innovation plan, one of our priorities at Franklin MS is to ensure every student feels a sense of belonging here.  While many factors contribute to that sense of belonging, the language we use and the way we show respect to one another plays a large role in building that sense of belonging for every individual.  As I walked through the school during these lessons this week, I heard really insightful and reflective conversations from our students.  I am proud of their ability to reflect and identify ways they can collectively contribute to a positive environment here at school.  I have also received several messages from families sharing how they have had recent discussions at home about this topic and I encourage you to continue having those conversations.  This is a goal that will not be accomplished with one week of Falcon Time lessons, but rather, something we will continue to work on through the rest of this year and in future years.  I truly appreciate your partnership on this as we continue to build upon this great sense of community.

On another note, this week we celebrated Administrative Professionals Day!  I would like to take a moment to thank our incredible office staff, including my administrative assistant, Cindy Horan, office assistants Cynthia Davenport and Kathy Yangas, finance technician, Tracy Harbold, and student services assistant, Kristine Smith.  These 5 individuals ensure the efficient operation of our school and are truly at the heart of the school.  I am so proud to have them as members of our Franklin community and am grateful for all they do.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend and, as always, please reach out to me at [email protected] with questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Michelle Case

Interim Principal

Bestselling author, Stuart Gibbs, visited Franklin!

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

We had a super busy but fantastic week here at Franklin Middle School!  As you can see from the pictures above, we welcomed New York Times bestselling author, Stuart Gibbs, to Franklin MS on Wednesday!  All students were able to participate in his presentation and many students took advantage of the opportunity to get autographed copies of his books.  I’d like to give a huge thank you to our PTA for their generosity in contributing funds to support this event.

This week we also welcomed members of the Fairfax County Urban Forest Management Division as they supported us with the planting of 7 new trees on our property.  These trees were provided to us through a Fairfax County grant program, funded by the Tree Preservation and Planting Funds and supported by Sully Representative Kathy Smith.  Members of our Get2Green team participated in the planting of the trees and were eager to learn more about the many benefits of having trees in our community.  Please check out our social media accounts to see pictures from this great event!

Last night we hosted Stone Middle School for the first of what we hope will become an annual tradition of basketball games with them.  Our Falcons came up short but we had a fantastic crowd cheering on our student athletes.  Participation in sports and extracurricular activities is one of several important ways to support the overall success of our students and we look forward to continuing to expand opportunities for our students to become involved at Franklin MS.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend and, as always, please reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.  Best of luck to our track team in their competition tomorrow, as well as to our musicians performing in the solo and ensemble festival at Carson Middle School!

Sincerely,

Michelle Case

Interim Principal

Passover

Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery. Theravada New Year

In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration.

Engineering 2 students are programming their VEX robots to complete obstacle courses.

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

I hope you all had a wonderful spring break!  We are now officially in the 4th quarter of the school year!  This quarter is such an exciting time of year, including field trips, end of year activities and awards celebrations.  It is also the time of year full of state-required and end of course exams.  We recognize students sometimes get anxious during this time of year, whether it be about upcoming assessments or perhaps about the transition to high school, so we ask you please keep us posted if you notice any changes with your child.  I am so proud of how hard our students have worked this year and how much they have grown and I want to partner with you to ensure they finish the year as strong as possible.

In addition to celebrating the start of the 4th quarter and, finally, a sunny day, this week we are also celebrating several staff members and a student!  This week is National Assistant Principals Week so I would like to give a huge shout out to Ms. Forrest Reid and Ms. Sarah Burrowbridge for their never-ending support and commitment to our students and community.  Yesterday we also celebrated National Librarian Day, in which we honored our fantastic librarian Ms. Sheri Ruffle!  We are so grateful for the support Ms. Ruffle provides our students each day, as well as her collaboration with our staff.  Next, we are celebrating the nomination of one of our special education teachers, Ms. Julia Hills, for the Fairfax County Special Education PTA Award!  Ms. Hills is a strong advocate for our students and an exceptional partner with our families.  Lastly, we celebrate our 7th grade student, Laura, for her Gold Key award-winning short story in the Scholastic Writing Contest!  Congratulations to these staff members and our student!

As a reminder, tonight is our pyramid art show at Chantilly High School.  I am excited to see the talent of our students on display for our community and the talent of our entire pyramid.  Please see the flier below for additional details and I hope to see you there!  And lastly, I know there is great excitement about the solar eclipse this Monday.  I ask you to review the information found below with your child about how to remain safe during the eclipse, particularly as your child is riding the bus or walking home.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend and, as always, please reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Michelle Case

Pre-registration is highly encouraged; walk-in appointments may not be available.  You can register here: Student registration.  Once your registration is received, the school’s athletic trainer will contact you to confirm your appointment time.  Athletic physical exams must be completed on this form: FCPS Middle School Sports Athletic Participation/Parental Consent/Physical Examination Form (PPE).

If you are a medical professional (MD, DO, NP, PA, ATC, PT, EMT, etc.) interested in volunteering your time in support of these events, please register to help out:  Volunteer registration.

Students visited alpacas during Stress Less, Laugh More Week.

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

We have had an incredible week here at Franklin Middle School!  Beginning last Friday evening, we had a great turnout at our annual Franklin MS vs. Rocky Run MS basketball game.  While we did not return home with the trophy, our students and staff played their hearts out and our fans were so supportive!  We even had the honor of hosting Dr. Reid, our division superintendent, for the event!  Thank you to our students, families and volunteers for making this such a successful event and a special thank you to our after-school specialist, Chris Tippins, and his team for organizing the night.

We continued the fun and excitement from Friday night into this week for our second annual Stress Less, Laugh More week!  It was a week filled with therapy dogs, alpacas, spirit days, games and overall fun.  I wish to extend my gratitude to our community for their donations to the event and a huge thank you to our counselor, Kim Gallagher, for planning this entire week!  The last week of the quarter is always a challenging time but the events this week helped to remind us all how we can effectively manage stressful times.

As a reminder, our school offices will be closed next week for Spring Break.  We will resume normal office hours on Monday, April 1, 2024.  April 1st and 2nd are both student holidays so we look forward to welcoming our students back to the building on Wednesday, April 3, 2024.  This spring break is an important time for our students, families and staff to rest and recharge as we prepare for the final quarter of the year and all of the excitement that comes along with that.  Students should not have any assignments due or tests administered immediately upon return to school from the break.  Additionally, I have asked our staff to disconnect from work as much as possible so should you have any questions for staff, please know they will be offline until their return on April 1st.

I wish you all a wonderful spring break and joyous holidays for those who are celebrating during this time.  As always, please reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Michelle Case

Interim Principal

📖 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction.  Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills.  It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.  Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9 at 6:30 PM, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth.  Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home.  Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Eighth grade students visited Chantilly HS and Oakton HS to learn about organizations, clubs, and sports to join next year.

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

Our 8th graders had an amazing day today at their high school activities fairs!  We are so grateful for the partnerships with our high schools to allow our students this chance to visit and see what opportunities might be available for them as they transition into 9th grade.  A special thank you to our parent volunteers who helped to make this such a successful experience for our students today.

The excitement our 8th graders were feeling from their high school visits today also continues for our entire student body tonight for our annual Franklin MS vs Rocky Run MS basketball game!  Please join me in cheering on our Falcons to another year of victory tonight!  Our staff game tips off at 5:00 at Chantilly HS so please bring your loudest voices and enthusiasm to our side of the gym!  For families dropping off their child at the event, please be sure to be back by 8:15 to pick up your child.

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

This week we celebrated our incredible social worker, Ms. Elyse Brunais, during National School Social Worker Week!  We are so grateful for the endless support Ms. Brunais provides our students and families each day.  She consistently goes above and beyond to find solutions for families and is a staunch advocate for all students.  Thank you, Ms. Brunais for everything you do for our Franklin community!

I also would like to give a special shout out to our students who competed in this year’s Real Food for Kids competition last weekend at Hayfield Secondary School!  Their “Salsata with Z Chips and Dill Dip” was a crowd favorite and led to many repeat customers at their table!  Thank you to Ms. Siri Jeffry for leading our three chefs in this competition and highlighting the many talents of our Franklin students.  Please check out our Facebook and Instagram pages for pictures from the event.

This weekend is also an opportunity for our band and orchestra students to highlight their talents at their annual assessment.  We wish all of our musicians the best of luck this weekend and are so proud of the growth you have shown this year!

I wish you all a wonderful weekend and, as always, please reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Michelle Case

Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)

Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins.  Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark.  Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes.

Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

  Ramadan

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

March 11 is an O day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact Mrs. Case regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

  💻New Policy Regarding Broken Laptops

We want to make sure all students have the tools they need to succeed, which is why we are implementing a new policy for broken laptops.  If your student's laptop needs a repair, we will take care of it at no cost the first time.  However, if the same part breaks again, there will be a small fee to cover the cost of replacement.  Here are some of the prices for commonly damaged parts:

- Laptop screen: $85.00

- Keyboard: $32.00

- Bezel: $8.00

Students can bring their laptops to Mr. Jones in room 106A for repairs.  We encourage students to take care of any issues now to ensure they have a fully functioning laptop for SOL testing in May.  Remember, the first repair is on us!

📃Screen Activity Reports

Parents can get information about their child's activity on their FCPS laptop. Sign up to receive a weekly Parent Report from Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, which will provide a list of the top sites the child visited that week.

Our After School Program offers a variety of activities for students.

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

As you may recall, next week’s schedule has been altered to accommodate Virginia’s primary election on Tuesday, March 5th.  Schools will be closed that day, although our main office will be open for the morning, should you have any questions or need anything.  Because this schedule change was made after the official division calendar was published, our A/B period schedule is impacted.  After receiving feedback from the Franklin MS staff, we have decided to shift Wednesday, March 6th from a B/even day to an all-period anchor day.  This will allow students to see their A/odd day teachers twice next week instead of just once.  For clarity, Monday will be a B/even day normal schedule, Wednesday will be an all-period anchor day (schedule below), Thursday will be an A/odd day normal schedule and we will conclude the week on Friday with our normal B/even day schedule.  We are sharing this information with students during our morning news and social media accounts but want to be sure families are also supporting with the messaging.

I also would like to bring to your attention the Family Engagement Survey, which opens this weekend.  I ask that you consider sharing feedback through this survey, as it significantly helps us, both as a school and an entire school division, to ensure we are supporting our families as much as possible and creating meaningful partnerships.  The survey remains open until March 22nd so I appreciate your consideration.

Lastly, please make sure to mark your calendars for Friday, March 15th for the annual Franklin MS vs Rocky Run MS basketball game!  The first game tips off at 5:00 and it is sure to be a fun and action-packed event!  Franklin MS is the defending champion and we need your spirit to ensure we retain our title!

I wish you all a wonderful weekend.  Please reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Michelle Case

Interim Principal

Students are working hard on their pillow projects in FACS.

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

It is hard to believe that we are wrapping up the month of February next week!  Related to that, we are officially at the halfway point of the 3rd quarter.  This is a great opportunity to connect with your child over the coming days to review current grades in StudentVue/ParentVue and ensure your child is on track to successfully completing the quarter.  As a reminder, teachers have office hours every week during Falcon Time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Additionally, homework club is a regular part of our after-school program and students can make appointments to stay after with teachers.

Next week our assistant principals will be meeting with all students for a midyear Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) review.  This is an opportunity for us to review behavioral expectations, specifically those outlined in our Falcons CARE matrix.  As you review your child’s grades with them, I ask you also review their attendance with them, including any class tardies.  While we understand there are inevitably times when a student is late to a class, we do have concerns if a student is coming consistently late to a class and missing valuable instructional time.  We appreciate your support in reminding your child of the importance of coming to class on time.

Lastly, I would like to officially welcome our new administrative assistant, Ms. Cindy Horan, to the Franklin Community!  Cindy’s first day with us was Tuesday and she has done an amazing job transitioning into this new role.  I look forward to you having the chance to connect with her sometime in the near future.

I wish you a wonderful weekend and, as always, please reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Michelle Case

Interim Principal

Students passed out Candy Grams on Valentine's Day.

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

We had a wonderful week celebrating kindness!  Students and staff did an amazing job with their participation in our spirit week, particularly with our “cupid shuffle” in which our staff dressed like students and students as staff!  In addition to our fun spirit week, we also enjoyed delivering candy grams to students and the conclusion of our student volleyball tournament during Falcon Time.  The week was a great reminder to all students and staff about how special this Franklin community truly is and the care we show each other everyday.  It was also a way to ground ourselves back in our tier 1 Falcons CARE behavior matrix, which highlights and celebrates the behaviors we wish for all students to exhibit each day.

This week we also had the opportunity to celebrate Officer Jim Smith for SRO Appreciation Day on Thursday!  We are so grateful for not only his role in keeping us safe each day, but also his commitment to building positive relationships with our students and staff.

Lastly, we have several student successes to share!  Our Robotics team of Kaichen and Hayden came home with yet another award this past weekend at the Robots at the Mall tournament!  Also, a huge congratulations to Raiyan Saaim, Noelle Eunhae Moon, Nihira Gole and Jamie Choi for their Regional Scholastic Art awards!  We are so proud of the many talents of our students here at Franklin Middle School!

I wish you all a wonderful long weekend and, as always, please reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Students created beautiful and tasty treats for Cupcake Wars

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

We have much to celebrate this week at Franklin MS!  First, we were thrilled to celebrate our amazing counselors and student services team this week for National School Counseling Week!  Thank you to everyone who sent in a brief note or shared some appreciation for all this fantastic team does for our students.

We also are celebrating a tremendous accomplishment of our Franklin Robotics Team that won 1st place at last weekend’s VEX IQ Tournament at Metz Middle School!  Our winning team of Hayden and Kaichen will compete in the Virginia State Championship on March 2nd.  Congratulations to Hayden and Kaichen!

This week several faculty members were treated by our talented student bakers in this year’s version of Cupcake Wars.  The competition was intense, as our students showcased their creativity and skills to make winter-themed cupcakes.  I had the honor of presenting certificates to our 1st place winners, pictured in the upper right hand corner of our collage.  Kudos to all of our student bakers for such a fun and sweet event!

Lastly, we are celebrating the kindness of our entire community, particularly our students, with our kindness spirit week next week.  Please take a moment to view our dress up days below and we look forward to celebrating our fantastic school community.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend and, as always, please reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Michelle Case

Students are gearing up for a volleyball tournament next week.

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

We had a wonderful start to our second semester this week!  Students adjusted well to their new schedules and were excited to begin exploring the fun opportunities in their new electives courses.

Speaking of new classes, I want to remind you of our upcoming rising 8th grade virtual curriculum night this Tuesday evening.  This is a chance to hear from our Student Services team about 8th grade course selections and provide you with a refresher regarding the many opportunities we have for our students.  In addition to supporting our rising 8th grade families, we will also host a breakout room for our rising 9th grade families that have some lingering questions following the high school curriculum night events last month.  A separate email will be sent on Monday with the zoom link for this event.  Please note, the same link will be used for both rising 8th and rising 9th grade presentations, as we will utilize breakout rooms to separate the two groups.

Lastly, next week is National School Counselor Appreciation Week!  We are so lucky to have an incredible team of counselors here, including Joni Fraundorfer, Kim Gallagher and Sarah Zeid.  If you have a moment next week, please consider reaching out to your child’s counselor or submitting an "FCPS Cares" nomination to let them know how much you appreciate all they do.  Please see below for additional information on the appreciation week.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and as always, please reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Michelle Case

Engineering students took their cars to the racetrack.

Good evening, Franklin Community,

As you know, we have officially wrapped up the first half of the school year!  I am so proud of what our students have accomplished and am in awe of the growth they have exhibited thus far.  We have seen incredible academic gains, as well as overall improvements with student behavior.  I encourage you to take a moment this weekend to reflect with your child on their successes, as well as their goals for the second half of the year.  I want to take a moment to thank you for your partnership with us and I look forward to that continued partnership this year and beyond.

As we move into the second semester, your child's schedule may alter as a result of new semester electives.  Please take a look at Parentvue/Studentvue to see any changes.  School staff members will be available first thing Monday morning to support any student who is unsure of where to report or how to find their updated schedule.

And lastly, just a friendly reminder of our SpongeBob performances, which begin tonight!  My family and I are excited to catch opening night tonight and celebrate the hard work done by our students.

As always, please reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Michelle Case

National Mentoring Month

Imagine a world where young people feel empowered, encouraged, and understood.  Mentors can make that world a reality by helping young people find and follow their passions, excel in school, and thrive wherever they are. Learn more about Mentoring Month.

Research has shown that young people with at least one trusted mentor are less likely to skip school, less likely to use illegal drugs or drink alcohol, and more prepared to enter college or the workforce.  Yet one in three children lack a mentor.

All it takes is one person to serve as a trusted adult to help change a young person’s path in life.  Mentors provide attention, support, and enrichment, and help connect their mentees to resources that may help them on their journey in life.

FCPS’ MentorWorks program matches mentors with students in schools near where they live or work.  They meet for at least 30 minutes a week.  Learn more about how to become a mentor for an FCPS student.  Please contact Martha Macdonald, mentoring specialist, for additional information at [email protected]

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

I hope you are all finding ways to enjoy the snow day!  It certainly was not the week we all were expecting but I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with our rising 7th grade families this past Wednesday night and showcase all of the great opportunities we have for students at Franklin MS!

While many of us enjoy the fun of a snow day, please note that one unfortunate consequence of our closure today is the delay of our opening night for our winter musical, SpongeBob.  We are hopeful the weather will cooperate to allow us to open tomorrow night instead but please stay tuned to messaging from FCPS regarding activities this weekend.  For those who were planning to come this evening, I hope you are able to catch another showing these next couple of weeks.

I wish you a restful and warm unexpected long weekend and, as always, please reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Students launch their model rockets in Technology Education.

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

We had another exciting week here at Franklin Middle School, including the visit of our rising 7th graders!  Our current students played such an important role in these visits, serving as tour guides and panel members for our future Falcons.  It was so fun seeing the pride and excitement of our students being able to share their experiences with our rising 7th graders and helping to set them up for a great 2 years here.

One of the important tips our current students shared with our rising 7th graders is the importance of checking grades.  As we approach the last 2 weeks of the second quarter, I want to take this moment to remind our students and their families to please check Parentvue and Studentvue over this long weekend to double check grades and, if needed, determine a plan to finish the quarter strong.  Our teachers and counselors are here to support you with any questions you might have about grades.

And lastly, I have some bittersweet news to share about an integral member of our Franklin Middle School community.  My administrative assistant, Jade Horne, has been promoted to a new role in FCPS, serving as the Region 4 executive administrative assistant.  Jade has been a friendly, helpful and caring person for all of our families and students since 2020 and prior to that, at Oak Hill Elementary School.  I am so excited for her to move on to this well-deserved opportunity but she will be greatly missed here.  Jade’s last day at Franklin is today.  I am in the process of hiring a new administrative assistant and will share updates on that as soon as they are available.  In the meantime, if you have had the pleasure of speaking with Jade, I know you share my bittersweet sentiments but absolutely wish her the very best.

I hope you all have a wonderful long weekend and as always, please reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions.

Sincerely,

Michelle Case

Interim Principal

  Volunteer with Give Together

FCPS students continue to find incredible ways to serve their community while building Portrait of a Graduate skills such as becoming an ethical and global citizen.  The school division is excited to collaborate with Volunteer Fairfax for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Students and families can volunteer on Monday, January 15, at Volunteer Fairfax’s Give Together event.  It is designed to engage families with children (ages 5-12) in service learning.  Projects will include a food drive, assembling caring kits for community members who need support, making no-tie fleece blankets for veterans, environmental stewardship, and support for animal welfare.

Students ages 13 to 18 are welcome to serve as teen event volunteers.  This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
