The Real Food for Kids: Culinary Challenge took place on Saturday, March 5, 2022. The event was hosted at Hayfield Secondary School. There were 6 teams from across northern Virginia competing for the 1st Place title. 1st Place winners of the competition have a chance to see their meal adapted and served in lunch lines around the area.  Franklin’s team of 7th graders Anvita G., Hannah L., Janya P., and Ellie W. took home a 2nd Place victory and won the Community Choice award for best dish. All the teams spent months preparing and perfecting their culinary creations. They made sure their meal not only tasted good but was equally nutritious.

The theme this year was Buy Local Eat Local. Franklin’s 7th graders prepared a Vegijita Wrapadilla, Corn Ensalada, and Zesty Watermelon. Not only did they create a tasty dish and prepare 200 samples for the community to taste, but they also worked together as a team to deliver a presentation to leading industry experts. Anvita G., Hannah L., Janya P., and Ellie W. displayed excellent teamwork, communication, and Falcon pride. Please help us congratulate them on their extraordinary accomplishment. 

The Real Food for Kids: Culinary Challenge brings awareness to Family and Consumer Science classes around the area. Family and Consumer Science is an elective class for most middle school and high school students. At Franklin Middle School, there are two FCS classes available for your students to take. In each class, they learn critical life skills to prepare them for high school, college, and adulthood. Students learn about kitchen safety, sanitation, and cooking basics. All of which prepare students for success in life and the Real Food for Kids: Culinary Challenge. If your student is interested in competing in next year's culinary challenge, make sure they request to take a Family and Consumer Science class.
